1950s street scenes

Local builder Wally Peedell, whose yard occupied what is now the house next to the community centre, shot a series of 9 mm cine films in 1958 and 1959. This selection shows some typical street activity—and views of some long-gone pubs.

Cranham Street used to be a blot on the city

Before Grantham House was built, the site became notoriously derelict, making Cranham Street according to the local press a ‘blot on the city’ – wrecked by local children, and a refuge for rats and for ‘layabouts sleeping off the drink’ who were repeatedly evicted by the police.
