November 51965. Local kids build a bonfire in the old recreation ground at the top of Jericho Street, now the school playground. the City Council regularly remove all the rubbish, but the kids just get some more to build it up again. Finally it produces a fine blaze, with some singed sausages, and fingers.

Did you know?

Margaret Thatcher used to live here?

In her Oxford days, she lived at 12 Richmond Road. It is alleged she shared the house with two red-hot communists who lived on a diet of sausages. This may account for her later views on socialists and known dislike of sausages.

The origins of Nelson Street?

Nelson Street takes its name from a local pub, the Lord Nelson, subsequently renamed Carpenters’ Arms—which has since been converted to housing.
