JERICHO COMMUNITY CENTRE

Jericho Community Centre

A hive of activity in the heart of Oxford

The Jericho St. Barnabas Community Centre serves the residential district of Jericho in the heart of Oxford.

The Centre, which is on the corner of Canal Street and Cardigan Street, hosts many local activities, including babies and toddlers club and a Saturday Community Cafe — as well as numerous classes from ballet to Tai Chi to pre-natal. The Centre is run by the Jericho Community Association which raises income for the Centre by letting out office space and also several large rooms - ideal for meetings and family parties.

The Cafe at the Community Centre offers delicious food on Saturday mornings.

Did you know?

Why Jericho still has such a mix of houses?

Jericho’s intriguing mix of housing today owes a lot, to the Residents’ Association in the 1960s and 1970s which together with the then Vicar and some local councillors resisted plans to bulldoze the whole area and turn it over to offices and light industrial use.

The origins of Walton?

Walton is derived from “wall town” which was used centuries ago to indicate a location outside the Oxford city walls. The ancient manor of Walton was certainly in existence before the Norman conquest in 1066.
