Alive and Kicking

Posted - September 08, 2017

What at an eventful year!

17 Bus – first we won it then we sadly lost it in July.

Oxford Playhouse gave us free tickets for 6 wonderful shows and promised to give us more in the future.

Chris Eady ran some great craft workshops and we have the Easter bunnies to prove it (though the chocolate eggs have all been eaten). She promises more exciting craft events in the future.

We went to Yarnton Nursery Garden Centre, had a delightful tea at Thrupp, three of us went on a coach trip to Lee on Solent with the Cuttleslowe seniors and had a lovely time basking in the sun at the seaside.  We did exercise classes and singing workshops with Kate. Helen Fountain from the Museum of Oxford helped us relive the lives of Famous People who lived in Oxford.  The sun shone yet again on Anne’s Annual Garden Party.  We celebrated everyone’s birthdays in style! Our 4th Anniversary Lunch at Al Shami Restaurant was a great success with delicious food.

Sadly we have learnt that Sara, who came annually from Cape Town to visit her granddaughter in Oxford, died this year.  She loved coming to the group and we all admired her tremendously.

Here are some comments from Alive and Kicking Members:

“I loved the opportunity of going to the Oxford Playhouse and seeing some tremendous productions.”

‘We enjoyed the visit to the Garden Centre’

I enjoy my time with the group so much. Doing different things and going to places. One of the things I enjoyed this last year was making things, like Christmas wreaths, Easter presents and necklaces. I like being with everyone - so lovely and friendly too!
Belonging to Alive and Kicking has been a very rewarding experience, feeling part of the community and enjoying the many varied benefits….
‘I love Alive and Kicking!’

We start up again on Monday 11 September at 2 pm Jericho Community Centre when we can decide the autumn programme.  Chris is happy to do more craft workshops, Magdalen College School have invited us to tea on a Tuesday. Ideas for other events are welcomed! Cutteslowe Seniors are happy for us to go on their annual outing to the seaside next September if there is room on their coach.  At £5 this is a great deal.

We no longer have to organize our own Exercise classes.  Age UK Oxon are running Chair-based Exercise classes every Friday from 10.30 – 11.30 am at Jericho Community Centre. Cost £4 (members of Alive and Kicking need only pay £2 which comes out of our funds) The excellent tutor is Caroline (an Occupational Therapist) who lives in Hart Street. Anne, Margaret, Lisa and Norah are regular attendees so far. Note there will be no Friday exercise class on Friday 22nd September

Look forward to seeing you next Monday!
