Jericho Community Centre

A hive of activity in the heart of Oxford

The Jericho St. Barnabas Community Centre serves the residential district of Jericho in the heart of Oxford.

The Centre, which is on the corner of Canal Street and Cardigan Street, hosts many local activities, including An Alive and Kicking Club and a Saturday Community Cafe — as well as numerous classes from ballet to Tai Chi to life drawing. The Centre is run by the Jericho Community Association which raises income for the Centre by letting out office space and also several large rooms - ideal not just for classes but for meetings and family parties.

According to the 2001 Census, in Jericho 28% of those working were self-employed, while 18% worked part time. Around 20% were in higher professional occupations compared with 14% for Oxford. Where the community centre came from?

The centre was built at the end of the 19th century as the Church Institute for St. Barnabas.
