JERICHO ECHO ARTICLE
July 1988
.....What we need in the Jericho Echo are far more contributions. This is my second "stint" as Editor for the Echo and it is becoming increasingly difficult to produce a paper that is more than a notice board of current and past events. Of course that is a valuable part of the paper but shouldn't become its only function. As the community in Jericho changes it is inevitable that the particular spirit that existed ten to fifteen years ago will also change. But have we really become a community where only the faithful "Old Guard" continue to organise events, run jumble sales, take the local children on outings during the long holidays and look after your general interests in the form of the Jericho Residents Association, not to mention trying to keep your very own paper delivered, free of charge, to your door? In order to keep the spirit in this area we need, all of us to participate in some form or another. The area, due to housing problems in the city and a high percentage of "investment" buying, is already light years away from the Jericho that was operative only five -six years ago. As a community we have always included and welcomed newcomers but it seems that there are far too many people now in the district that are either "too busy" or perhaps too quick to rely on Mrs. X or Mr. Y "who have always done things" to carry the burden of keeping local events alive. Or perhaps they think that they are not needed. Well, let's state it loud and clear, YOU are not only needed but would be welcomed in whatever capacity you care to offer your services. If that includes sending in Suitable articles, letters, or other forms of contribution to the Jericho Echo then so much the better. If the Echo dies due to lack of interest it will be a sad day for Jericho itself.Author: Sue Bateman
