Letters to and from City Engineer

Renaming of Cardigan Street

March 1983

John Power sent a copy of the front page of the last "Echo" to Mr.Butler, the City Engineer. He received the following in reply. Street Lighting,Junction of Gt. Clarendon St. and Canal St., Suggested renaming of Cardigan St..

Letter from City Solicitor Thank you for your letter of 24th January in connection with these two matters. I have inspected the street lighting at the junction of Gt. Clarendon St. and Canal St. and in my view this is of a satisfactory standard and not dissimilar from that at other junctions in the Jericho area(Is this a recommendation though even if we all agreed with it?Editor). In the circumstances,I do not consider any improvement can be justified. With regard to the suggested renaming of Cardigan Street this has been proposed in the past but has met much local opposition. As this matter has now been raised again I propose writing to the Residents' Association to ascertain their views. The suggestion I shall be putting to them is that the length of Cardigan Street contiguous with Walton Street should be re-named King Street so that the latter street would then run from Walton Street to Jericho Street. Yours sincerely, D. A. Butler City Engineer

Visitors' Parking Permits The Jericho Residents' Association welcomes the long awaited provision of Visitors' Permits that so many of the older residents have been asking for since the parking restrictions in Jericho were brought in many years ago. We shall watch with interest the results of the first year. However, the circumstances in Jericho have changed considerably over the past ten years. Notably in the great increase in multi-occupancy so the crucial question is 'who is a resident?1 The ordinary Residents' Parking Permit is limited to those having a car but this does not apply to Visitors' Permits, nor should it. In theory, therefore, any person on the electoral roll, in any unit of accommodation, no matter how small, would.be eligible to apply for fifty permits a year. Surely this would also apply to households where two, three or more members are over eighteen and therefore on the electoral roll?

There is therefore a measure of apprehension that the scheme may defeat its own purpose. The fear is that residents tfho have little or no need for visitors' permits will be tempted to dispose 6f them to non-residents and encourage more illicit parking in the area. This fear is strongest among the residents of roads leading off Walton Street, such as Richmond Road, Walton Crescent, Cranham Street and Juxon Street. It will be seen therefore that while the principle of a visitors' parking scheme is very welcome we now have serious reservations on how it will work out in present circumstances . Christine Cowham, Hon.Sec. Jericho Residents' Assn.

Letter to Cllr.Power from the City Engineer Dog Fouling in Jericho Thank you for your letter of 24th January. I will ensure that some signs are erected in the Jericho area and in particular in Cardigan St.. You will be pleased to know that money is available in this year's estimates for the erection of suitable signs. These are at present being designed and an order will be issued shortly for their manufacture. These areas are swept twice a week and all dog foulings are cleared. As signs are to be erected in the near future I do not feel it appropriate to consider the issue of notices to householders at the present time. Yours sincerely, D.A.Butler.
