Mount Street

No rumble strips

October 1980

Many people will remember the meeting we had last winter with the Council to discuss the proposal that Mount Place be closed to traffic and the section of Canal Street in front of Whitworth Place be paved over. You will also recall that many people were against the idea, not to mention Wally and all the other roundsmen, and it was finally agreed that the most acceptable plan was to put in 'rumble strips' at the corner of Cranham Street and Canal Street and at the entrance to Mount Street to discourage traffic and then just make up Canal Street with traffic ramps outside the garages.

The Council now tell us that 'rumble strips' are not allowed and have come back with the idea that Mount Place be closed and that there should be turning circles at the ends of Canal and Mount Street. This has been turned down by the JRA as this was rejected by the majority of people at the public meeting and it has been suggested that the Council restrict themselves to paving over Canal Street. Mind you there isn't any money to do anything at the moment so there is no need to be alarmed. In fact the people of Canal Street will be lucky if they get the road even made up before next year leave alone improved. Seems a funny way to save money to hold a public meeting to find out what people really want and then make plans to do the opposite.
