Post office bounces back

New stationers

March 2001

The expansion of the Co-op in Walton Street dealt a body blow to the grocery business at the post office. But as Janet Tratt, points out, "The problem was not so much the scale of the new shop but that they matched our opening hours". Janet and Tony Tratt took over the Post Office in 1994, after 13 years of running a pub. Kelly (in the post office) and Paula (in the shop) were already working there. "We saw that if we didn't do something we would go out of business", said Janet. "Over Christmas, we wondered what to do, and decided that what Walton Street needed was a good stationers". They have already revamped the store and will be offering other services such as binding and colour copying. But they are also keen to find out what else people would like to see there, so be sure to offer suggestions.
