At last the church clock faces have been repaired and re-gilded. Now even the East face works and they can all be clearly seen for some distance around. The onset of cold weather may necessitate slight adjustments of the clock to keep it on time but we hope to sort that out. The final bill for the work on the clock is £2,776.10. Mr. Arthur Young of Walton Crescent left £1000 and Mr. Bill Hayes of St. Barnabas Street £500, and these generous bequests go a long way to meeting this bill. There have been other generous donations including £46 raised by the local pubs but, even if the church contributes £500 from the reserve funds, we still need to find about another £470.
Every little helps and all contributions will be most gratefully received at the Vicarage. The craftsman, Mr. Bill Nichols, who was pictured on the bosun's chair in the Oxford Mail, was a marvellously phlegmatic man who took the height of the tower in his stride; and the biting breezes he had to contend with! He combines true skill with a real interest in, and love of, his work. Both the Mail and Radio Oxford paid tribute to him.
