JERICHO RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION - 1979 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

We thought this was quite a successful meeting though we were sorry that more residents did not turn up; but around twenty-eight interested people were there. The Chairman (Mr. E. Ardener) reviewed the activities of the past year, mentioning the work of following up planning applications in the area and in particular the misuse of planning permission for the Castle Hill flats. While planning permission was given for residential use the building appears to be used as a language school chiefly for foreign students. This would probably be passed unnoticed if the students did not on occasions hold noisy late night parties. He also mentioned the bad state of the St. Sepulchre's Cemetary (off Walton Street) and the noise problem, again late at night from performances, or rather from waiting queues a.t the Phoenix Cinema.

The Treasurer presented the accounts. For several years we have been running a small but increasing debt. Due to the generosity of Jericho residents this has now been wiped out with the help of a jumble stall at the summer fete a t the school on 28th May, and also their donations at this A.G.M. The audience were then invited to indicate their wishes regarding the nomination of Chairman, Secretary, the existing committee and the co-option of four new committee members.

The Chairman and Secretary were re-elected by a show of hands and also the existing committee. The four co-pted members were: Mrs. Rush, Miss Strawson, Mrs. Taylor and Mr. Jones. The Chairman then asked for an open discusoion from the floor. Thia was vigorously taken up especially on the subject of late night noise from the Castle Mill flats. It appears that this complaint gets little response from the owners. It was also agreed that the cemetary is in a bad state and needs attention from the right quarter. The amenity area near the canal bridge ia neglected by the Council.

Mrs. Needle mentioned the dirty state of the road near the Canal Street building site and the danger to small children due to fast traffic in various parts of Jericho. Miss Cowham called for restriction of parking in Gt. Clarendon Street when St. Paul's theatre comes into operation. She was hopeful that the Jericho news letter will be issued a-gain shortly.
