On Friday 22nd June, Oxford Area Arts Council announced the opening date for the new arts venue in Walton Street, St. Next year, on May 1st,the traditional May Morning celebrations will have an added cause when St. Paul's, re-opens its doors after 21 years of closure. Seating 300 people, St. Paul's will provide up-to-date facilities for theatre, music, dance and other arts which have been desperately needed for many years .
Oxford Area Arts Council chose this time to announce the opening date because £197,000 has now been received, promised, or identified towards the £262,000 needed to open St. Paul's. In particular Oxford City Council and the Arts Council of Great Britain have both indicated the availability of substantial support bringing the City's total contribution to £31,000 and the Arts Council's to £30,000. Consequently the OAAC is confident it can raise the remaining £65,000 in time, by means of major events, self-helping community activities, approaches to businesses, trusts and the public. Oxford Area Arts Council is a community-based group of arts enthusiasts, practitioners and supporters, for whom the opening of St. Paul's will constitute a major achievement.
