During term time around one quarter of Jericho residents are students. The Students Union has been working with Jericho Community Association to help us all get along. There are always likely to be some problems -- though necessarily what you might think. Sometimes it is students complaining about rowdy residents.
To ease students into Jericho life, the residents of St Barnabas Street also distribute a letter to the new student arrivals. This is a useful guide that all our students (and residents) might find useful:
Dear Neighbours:
The residents of St. Barnabas Street would like to welcome you to the street. We hope your stay will be both productive and enjoyable. We are happy to have you living alongside in this quiet residential area and would be very grateful if you observed the following requests:
- Please remember when coming home late at night, that people are sleeping and keep your voices low. There are families living on our street with young children, as well as elderly people. Late night noise poses a particular problem for them.
- Likewise when you have visitors and/or parties, would you ask your guests to be sensitive to the fact that people are asleep and arrive and leave as quietly as possible.
- When having parties please keep your doors and windows closed to lessen the noise heard by other residents.
- There are strict council rules governing what and when rubbish can be placed on the pavement. These rules are not only for the benefit of the council, but also for the residents. The street looks unsightly and slovenly when bins/bags are left out for days on end. Also litter attracts rats that are a particular problem in this neighbourhood – they are always looking for food and breed profusely.
- The council provides two methods of information about what rubbish to put out and when on their two weekly rota and will inform you in advance each week. They will tell you when the day changes as it sometimes does when there’s a bank holiday. They will also make special pick ups of bulky items if called on 01865 249811. For free weekly text messages text 07786 200848 with the word FRIDAY. For email information send an email to blue@oxford.gov.uk giving them your collection day which is FRIDAY and ask for an email to be sent to you each week.
Also would you please be aware that rubbish can only be put out late at night on the day before collection, or very early in the morning on the day of collection, and after the bins are emptied they must be taken in on the same day. Like most of us, you probably have difficulty in bringing a large wheelie bin through your house. One solution is to ask the council for the lavender coloured bags and keep these in a wheelie bin in your garden, only bringing out the bags for collection and not the bin.
Jericho is a lovely place to live, and its proximity to the centre of Oxford makes it a very desirable location. We are quite a close community and we welcome you amongst us, we only request that you help us keep the pavements tidy, don't leave bicycles spread across the pavement and limit noise after midnight. If any of us can be of assistance to you, we would be delighted to help.
