Approval in principle for the new centre

Posted - June 08, 2010

In order to secure land for a new community centre on the canalside site, the Jericho Community Association applied for outline planning application for the centre. This was granted unanimously by councillors at the Central, South and West Area Committee meeting on June 8, 2010.

This enables us to comply with the legal agreement reached with Spring concerning the transfer of land. Spring has now gone into administration but this commitment will pass to any new owner. Detailed plans for the centre will be drawn up later following community consultations.

The shaded area in the drawing above shows the area that the new centre would occupy.

What St Barnabas Church cost to build?

Thomas Combe the Superintendent of OUP and it was he who commissioned and paid for the construction of the church in 1869 at a cost of £6,492. All the interior fittings were provided for about £900. The campanile was erected in 1872 for £800.

Why Jericho still has such a mix of houses?

Jericho's intriguing mix of housing today owes a lot, to the Residents' Association in the 1960s and 1970s which together with the then Vicar and some local councillors resisted plans to bulldoze the whole area and turn it over to offices and light industrial use.
